What I do in Golden Plains

Everything I do around Geelong runs out here too. Mowing is the anchor. That means town lawns in Bannockburn, and the bigger rural-living blocks where a cut is closer to slashing than striping. Around the mowing sit hedges, tree work, mulch, weed control and gutters. Pick a service to see what is included and what moves the price.

The local knowledge

Gardening in Golden Plains

Golden Plains is different country to coastal Geelong. Bannockburn sits about 100 metres up and a good 25 kilometres from the water, so gardens out here miss the soft bay air that town gets. Most of the year's rain falls in winter and spring. The Bannockburn weather station has averaged about 513 mm a year since 1898, and January is usually the driest month. Winter mornings bite harder inland, so frost-tender plants want a sheltered spot, and anything planted in spring needs a watering plan to get through its first summer.

The soils are lean and quick to drain. On the Moorabool Valley side of Bannockburn, growers describe low-fertility ground built from volcanic debris and old seabeds over limestone. Further out you meet the usual south-west Victorian pattern: light topsoil over clay that holds winter water. The same block can bake hard in February and sit damp in July. Compost and a deep mulch before summer do more good here than fertiliser tipped onto lean ground.

This is River Red Gum country. The reserves at Inverleigh and Teesdale show what the land wants to grow: red gums, Golden Wattle, Blackwood, Drooping Sheoke, Silver Banksia, Sweet Bursaria and Kangaroo Grass underneath. The same plants make tough, low-water bones for a big garden. The strugglers are thirsty exotics, anything that needs rich soil, and acid lovers like azaleas and camellias, which sulk over limestone. There are more picks in my best plants guide.

The rules

Check before you cut

Golden Plains Shire takes native vegetation seriously. All native vegetation in Victoria is protected, and you generally need a planning permit to remove, lop or destroy it. That can cover native grass on an open paddock, not just trees. The shire warns owners not to touch anything before speaking to the council, and its officers will visit a property and tell you where you stand, which beats guessing.

There is also a statewide rule from September 2025 for larger canopy trees. In the residential parts of towns like Bannockburn, a tree over 5 metres tall with a solid trunk and a wide canopy usually needs a permit before it is removed or lopped. My approach is simple: check before you cut. If a job looks like it needs a permit, I will say so before anything is touched.

Weeds are the district's other big fight. The shire names serrated tussock as a problem around Bannockburn, Inverleigh, Teesdale and Batesford, and one mature plant can shed up to 100,000 seeds that ride the wind for kilometres. Gorse, blackberry and boxthorn turn up along fence lines too. Getting onto them early, before they set seed, saves seasons of work later.

Where I go in Golden Plains

Bannockburn is the hub, and I work the inland side out of Geelong through Batesford. Closer to town? See the Geelong page, or the full service area. If your spot is not on the list, ask anyway. If the drive works, the job works.

Common questions

Golden Plains questions

Do you run regular mowing rounds out here?

Yes. I take on regular rounds across Bannockburn and the district, fortnightly or monthly to suit the season: more often through the spring flush, stretched out over winter. A regular round means the lawn stays kept instead of rescued.

Will you travel for a one-off job?

I will. Bannockburn is an easy run from Geelong, and one-off jobs are welcome. Think a block tidied before settlement, long grass knocked down, a hedge brought back to shape, or gutters cleared before summer. For the far side of the shire it helps to bundle a couple of jobs into one visit, and I will be straight with you if the distance makes a small job poor value.

How does quoting work this far out?

The same way it works everywhere. We walk the garden together, or you text photos to 0452 319 113 if that is easier. Then I send one written quote, and the number you approve is the number you pay. On acreage, block size, grass length and mower access are what move the price, so a quick walk saves guesswork.
