Lawn mowing & maintenance in Geelong

A healthy lawn comes from regular care. WJ Sanderson Outdoor runs regular mowing rounds across Geelong, the Bellarine and the Surf Coast: weekly or fortnightly to suit the season, with the edges cut sharp along every path, driveway and garden bed, and every surface blown off before I leave. Clippings are caught or cleared, never left in drifts on your nature strip.

Beyond the cut, this is proper lawn care for Geelong conditions: feeding and fertilising timed to the season, patch repair and overseeding where the lawn has thinned, and a mowing height that keeps the grass green through a dry summer instead of scalped and brown. Tired lawns can be brought back; kept lawns never get tired.

How often should you mow in Geelong?

The honest answer changes with the season, because our grass growth does:

  • Spring (September to December): weekly. The flush is fast and cutting little-and-often is what builds a dense lawn.
  • Summer (January to February): fortnightly, cut higher. A longer leaf shades the soil and holds moisture through dry spells.
  • Autumn (March to May): fortnightly, with a feed to bank strength before the cold.
  • Winter (June to August): every three to four weeks. Growth nearly stops; this is when edges and tidy-ups matter most.

The one rule that never changes: never take more than a third of the leaf in a single cut. That is the difference between a lawn that stays green and one that browns off every January.

Local know-how: Geelong lawns

Most lawns around Geelong are couch, kikuyu or buffalo on heavy clay soil. Clay holds water in winter and bakes hard in summer, so mowing height and feeding schedule matter more here than in sandier suburbs. Coastal lawns on the Bellarine and Surf Coast are also exposed to salt wind, which is another reason to keep the grass slightly longer through summer.

Lawn mowing questions

How often should a lawn be mown in Geelong?

Weekly in the spring flush, fortnightly through summer and autumn, and every three to four weeks over winter. Little and often keeps a lawn dense and green.

How much does lawn mowing cost?

Every lawn is different, so every job gets one written quote before work starts. Regular rounds are priced per visit and cost less than one-off catch-up cuts. The number you approve is the number you pay.

Do you take the clippings away?

Yes. Clippings are caught or raked, paths and driveways are blown off, and everything leaves with me.

Can you bring a dead or patchy lawn back?

Usually, yes. Most tired Geelong lawns respond to a proper mowing height, seasonal feeding and patch repair with overseeding. It takes a season of regular care rather than one miracle visit.
