Mulching & landscaping in Geelong

Mulch is one of the most cost-effective things you can do for a Geelong garden. A proper layer holds moisture through the dry months, smothers most weeds before they start, feeds the soil as it breaks down and makes every bed look finished. Without it, many gardens struggle by February. I supply and spread the right mulch for the job, with beds weeded and edged first, mulch laid at the right depth and kept clear of trunks and stems, and no leftover pile abandoned on your driveway.

On the landscaping side, that can mean a single tired bed pulled apart and replanted, or a full garden rebuilt from bare fence to finished. Geelong's heavy soils, salt wind off the bay and dry summers punish the wrong plant in the wrong spot, so plant selection is a key part of the job. Every garden I build is planted to grow fuller each season, with structure that still looks deliberate in winter.

What's included

  • Mulch supplied and delivered
  • Beds weeded and prepped first
  • Spread at the proper depth
  • Bark, chip and straw options
  • Garden bed design and rebuilds
  • Plant selection for local conditions
  • Soil and compost top-ups
  • Garden edging and sleeper work

How much mulch do you need?

The quick maths: area (m²) × 0.075 = cubic metres at the proper 75mm depth. A typical bed of 20m² takes about 1.5m³. Two rules that save gardens:

  • Lay it 75 to 100mm thick. Any thinner lets weeds through, and any thicker stops rain getting in.
  • Keep it off trunks and stems. Mulch piled against a plant rots it at the collar.

Best timing in Geelong: late spring before the heat, topped up in autumn.

Plants that earn their keep in Geelong

Heavy clay in Highton and Belmont, sand closer to the coast, salt wind on the Bellarine and Surf Coast mean plant choice matters more here than fertiliser. Reliable performers I plant again and again: westringia and correa for structure, lomandra and dianella for texture, salvias and grevilleas for colour and birds. The right plant in the right spot saves you ongoing maintenance costs.

Mulching & landscaping questions

How thick should mulch be laid?

75 to 100mm for bark and chip. That is deep enough to smother weeds and hold moisture, shallow enough for rain to get through, and always kept clear of trunks and stems.

When is the best time to mulch in Geelong?

Late spring before the heat, with an autumn top-up. Without it, many Geelong gardens struggle by February.

What plants grow best in Geelong?

Plants that handle clay, dry summers and salt wind: westringia, correa, lomandra, salvia, grevillea and their mates. Choosing the right plant for the right spot is the job.

Do you supply the mulch or do I buy it?

I supply and deliver the right mulch for the job, or spread what you've already had delivered, whichever suits you.
